ChatGPT’s Growth Slows as Google’s Gemini Surges Ahead

The AI chatbot race just got tighter. New data from Sensor Tower shows ChatGPT’s explosive growth is beginning to cool, even as it remains the global leader with 50% of mobile downloads and 55% of monthly active users.
But the momentum?
That’s shifting toward Google’s Gemini, which is now outpacing ChatGPT in downloads, active users, and—more importantly—time spent.
Here’s what the numbers reveal:
ChatGPT’s MAUs grew 180% YoY, but only 6% from Aug–Nov, hitting ~810M users → signs of saturation.
Gemini’s MAUs jumped 170% YoY, but 30% from Aug–Nov → massive adoption spike driven by its viral image model Nano Banana.
Gemini users now spend 11 minutes/day, up 120% since March — while ChatGPT’s usage dipped 10% from July.
Gemini gained 3% global market share in seven months, while ChatGPT lost 3% in the last four.
Perplexity (+370% YoY) and Claude (+190% YoY) are also eating into the market.
The shift is big enough that OpenAI reportedly issued an internal “code red”, urging teams to prioritize personalization, reliability, image generation, and next-gen product quality.
Bottom line:
ChatGPT is still the leader — but Gemini is narrowing the gap fast. If OpenAI doesn’t ship something as sticky as Nano Banana soon, the race could flip in 2026.
OpenAI Ordered to Hand Over 20 Million ChatGPT Logs in NYT Copyright Case

In a major legal blow, a U.S. federal judge ruled that OpenAI must turn over 20 million anonymized ChatGPT logs to the New York Times and other publishers in the ongoing copyright lawsuit.
Judge Ona Wang rejected OpenAI’s argument that producing the logs would jeopardize user privacy, stating that “multiple layers of protection” are already in place and that the logs are central evidence in determining whether ChatGPT reproduced copyrighted news content.
Key developments:
The logs must be delivered within 7 days, with all user identifiers removed.
OpenAI maintains the request undermines security practices, but its appeal was overruled.
Publishers argue the logs will prove ChatGPT outputs news content without permission.
OpenAI argues 99.99% of logs are irrelevant — but the court says that’s not for OpenAI to decide.
MediaNews Group accused OpenAI of “hallucinating” if it thought it could hide how its model was trained.
This case is one of several lawsuits against OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta over training data. But this ruling is different:
It’s the first major order forcing an AI company to disclose internal chat logs, potentially setting a precedent for transparency in how AI models learn — and what they may copy.
Takeaway:
2025 isn’t just the year of AI acceleration. It’s the year AI companies are being pushed into unprecedented accountability.
